Fort Lauderdale Ban On E-Bikes

As e-bike accidents rise among children, AAA warns parents to not skimp on head gear With an increase in accidents, there’s a new push to keep kids safe on e-bikes and e-scooters. That includes the right headgear. (WSBTV.com News Staff)

Fort Lauderdale is preparing a major crackdown on e-bikes that includes banning them from specific high-traffic pedestrian areas. Amid growing safety concerns and an increase in crashes, city commissioners are advancing a strict new ordinance expected to be formally approved by the end of 2026, with full enforcement taking effect in 2027.

The new rules target not only electric bicycles, but also e-scooters, e-skateboards, hoverboards, and Onewheels.

🚫 Where E-Bikes Will Be Banned or Restricted

  • City Parks: E-bikes and micromobility devices will be completely prohibited from riding inside city parks. This specific ban targets park pathways, recreational trails, plazas, promenades, athletic fields, and open turf areas.
  • Sidewalks & Pedestrian Zones: While a total city-wide sidewalk ban is still under tight legal review, the city is clamping down on speed. Under the proposals, e-bikes will have strict speed limits on city sidewalks and will be restricted from operating in close proximity to pedestrians.

🪪 Stricter Riding Requirements

Beyond area bans, Fort Lauderdale is introducing several unprecedented operational rules:

  • Minimum Age: Riders must be at least 16 years old.
  • Identification: Operators will be required to carry a government-issued photo ID while riding.
  • Mandatory Registration: All e-bikes must be registered with the city and must continuously display an official registration decal.

💰 Fines for Violations

Violating any of the approved park bans, registration requirements, or age limits will result in a $250 fine for a first offense and $500 for subsequent violations.

This aggressive local push follows a trend among other South Florida municipalities—like Miami Beach and Sunny Isles Beach—which have already instituted outright sidewalk bans and age restrictions after Governor Ron DeSantis vetoed a uniform statewide e-bike safety bill.
