Despite popular belief, Valentine’s Day has been around a lot longer than candy hearts and last-minute flower runs!
The holiday dates all the way back to ancient Rome, where a mid-February festival celebrated love and fertility long before it became associated with romance.
The first known Valentine’s message was reportedly sent in the 1400s and today more than 145 million Valentine’s cards are exchanged every year — making it the second biggest card-sending holiday behind Christmas.
And yes, chocolate became a Valentine’s staple thanks to Richard Cadbury (we will see those Cadbury bunnies again soon), who started packaging sweets in heart-shaped boxes in the 1800s to boost sales. Safe to say… it worked!
These days, Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples. Friends, kids, coworkers and even pets get in on the fun, with Galentine’s celebrations, themed movie nights and creative DIY gifts becoming just as popular as traditional dinners out.
Whether you’re celebrating big love, friendship, or just an excuse to eat dessert without judgment, it’s really about taking a moment to show appreciation for the people who make life sweeter.
