BMW is recalling over 318,000 U.S. vehicles (including certain 3 Series, 4 Series, X3, X4, and Toyota Supra models) due to a risk that the engine starter motor may overheat and catch fire. Dealers will replace the engine starter free of charge.
Recall Details & Affected Models
- The Defect: Wear on an internal component can cause the engine starter to overheat from electrical overload during use.
- Affected U.S. Vehicles: Over 318,000 vehicles built between 2020 and 2025, including select 3 Series, 4 Series Coupe/Convertible, X3, X4, and Toyota Supra sports cars.
- The Remedy: Authorized dealers will replace the engine starter motor free of charge. Official owner notification letters are expected to go out by August 28, 2026, though service centers are already prepared to process repairs.
