Venus Photobombs A Star From Another Solar System Tonight!

Venus Astronomers have found a potential sign of life high in the atmosphere of neighboring Venus: hints there may be bizarre microbes living in the sulfuric acid-laden clouds of the hothouse planet. (Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA)

Tonight after sunset, look low in the western sky: super-bright Venus is going to cozy up right next to Regulus, the brightest star in Leo. And yes, Regulus is a real star, about 79 light-years away. So basically, Venus is photobombing another solar system.

So if Regulus is about 79 light-years away, the light hitting your eyes tonight left that star 79 years ago. Venus, meanwhile, is so close that its reflected sunlight get to us in just a matter of minutes. So in the same little patch of sky, you’re seeing one neighbor from right now-ish...and one star from the Truman administration.
